Quite an interesting scene, because the USD party was a short lived coalition between one party and another now defunct one. (see below). The portrait ofIvan Cismaru hangs on a political poster outside the party headquarters of the USD - good western,American leaning name!!- in Brasov. Next door a Coca-Cola wall sign ompetes with Pepsi at Party HQ. Cismaru, an academic at the local University of Transylvania, was the local representative in the Romanian senate for this area between 2004-8. Previously 1996-2000 he was a vice-president of the local district assembly the result of this election.. Sudden democratisation of Romania after the end of 1989 resulted in 150 political parties The USD is the Social Democratic Union, formed from a merger between the PDSR - the Romanian Social Democratic Party - and the PD FSN - the National Salvation Front one of the first political parties to emerge in the country after Caecescu's downfall. The USD governed in a coalition between 1996-2000. The PD ran jointly in the 1996 election with the now defunct PDSR under the USD banner. The FSN became the PD, a centre-right party - in 1993. In January, the PD merged with the Liberal Democratic Party to become the Democratic Liberal Party. (!) SInce 2008 the PDL has governed in coalition with thePSD, the social democrats. So, everything is moving towards the centre.
